OXNARD: Stop SB1070 & S-Comm! No More Police-Migra partnership! National Day of Action

July 28th will be a National Day of Actions against Arizona’s SB1070. But in Oxnard and across all of the US, a similar law exists… and local Assemblyman Das Williams (D-35th District) supports it!

“Through the ‘secure communities’ (S-Comm) deportation program, the Obama administration has, in effect, made every police officer in America an agent of deportation. Just like Arizona’s SB1070, the feds’ S-Comm program allows police to hunt down immigrants: it opens the door to racial profiling and pre-textual arrests, and it creates a rule of fear.

It turns out the supreme court justices agree. The fact that the court could not tell whether SB1070′s notorious racial-profiling provisions conflicts with federal policy means federal policy is far too similar to Arizona policy. In essence, the disgraced S-Comm deportation program is the sibling of Arizona’s law.”

However, a “California bill, known as the Trust Act (AB 1081), would create a barrier between the police and immigration authorities and could emerge as the antidote to Arizona’s SB1070.”

Das Williams is AGAINST the Trust Act, stating that “I don’t feel like I should be voting for a law to stop California’s participation in Secure Communities.” He has stated that he will REFUSE to vote for the CA Trust Act when it faces an important vote in the CA State Assembly after passing through the CA Senate with an overwhelming 21-12 majority.

In May 1, 2010, however, while Das campaigned in our communities, he stated that “[Arizona’s SB1070] legalizes that police can stop someone just based on race and an accent.” and that he was against it.

Which is it Das??

We will be protesting in front of Das Williams’ office at the OTC to send a clear message that we will not tolerate BROKEN PROMISES — we won’t just let it slide when they say one thing during their campaign, and something else once they are voted in! We demand that he takes a stand against Secure Communities and votes YES for the CA Trust Act.

Our demands:

  • Stop SB1070! Stand with the people of Arizona!
  • Stop S-Comm: Das Williams, support the CA Trust Act!
  • Documents and permanent residency rights for all
  • End the raids and deportations – stop the separation of families!
  • No to the militarization of the border and our communities.

Stand up to police abuses and bullying! Call the Oxnard police station and demand that they observe AB353, the new California law that curbs many police checkpoint abuses. Demand to speak to the Chief of Police Jeri Williams ( She policed 22 years in Arizona-a state notorious for targeting undocumented workers of color): 805.385.7624.

Colectivo Todo Poder Al Pueblo will be on hand at the checkpoint(s) this weekend to warn drivers that the checkpoints violate our human rights and to document whether Oxnard police will comply and observe AB353. Ultimately, we demand to see drivers licenses become reinstated and accessible for everyone regardless of citizenship status. Equal rights for all drivers!

See you in the streets!-Todo Poder Al Pueblo
