Erasing the poor: turning Colonia Village into a “blank canvas”

The Oxnard Housing Department is looking for a “clean slate” solution to the demands of residents in the Colonia Village housing projects to keep their homes. However, the City fails to take into account the fact that most of those living in the projects are elderly, or are relatives & caretakers of people with special needs. Meanwhile, a hired company has taken charge of “relocation,” but it’s clearly unable to meet the needs of over one hundred families who will be removed by July 2014.

“The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing”; information on the situation isn’t being exchanged between the City Council and the Housing Department director. However, the City wants residents to believe that “good intentions” are enough to solve the urgent needs of Colonia Village residents who will soon be displaced. We have to demand that the authorities respond to the real needs of these residents – without shifting responsibility to the middlemen and paid contractors who are being used  in a vile scheme to “erase” the poverty-stricken residents of Oxnard’s public housing projects from our community.

“At this time residents are being displaced without any empathy from the housing authority. We have elderly and disabled residents who are suffering from depression and anxiety because they feel that no one wants to assist them. They feel alone and cannot get straight information from the housing authority…” – María Fernández
